You’ll feel confident teaching your child to:

• Sound out and match up phonetically correct letter sounds
• Recognise the first sound in CVC words: cat starts with the sound c (k)
• Sound out the words by pulling apart each sound (segmenting): c-a-t

• CVC words

You’ll feel confident teaching your child to:

• Sound out and match up digraphs
• Sound out the words by pulling apart each sound (segmenting), including digraphs: k-i-ng, sh-e-ll
• Put the sounds back together (blending) to read the word, including digraphs: k-i-ng makes the word king
• Recognise digraph sounds at the beginning, middle and end of words: k-i-ng, king ends with the sound ng, the last sound in king is ng
